Transition to Freelancing

Updated: Mar 11, 2022

Before starting my journey in #freelancing, I worked as customer service rep in several call center companies but decided to change my career path as I was having difficulty traveling to and fro and because of the time constraints that I have to be on the road every day, rain or shine due to graveyard shift. I, then decided, to find work online and be a work-at-home mom.

Freelancing

Freelancing gave me an opportunity to take care of my family while earning at the same time in the comfort of my home. Upwork was the first suggested online website where I found work. I started as an audio transcriptionist, and then I was able to get short contracts on being a data encoder, a voice-over talent, email support and many more.

It was rewarding as you own your own time. I work when it was convenient for me. The kids were happy since they see me when they come home from school. I went on vacation with the family anytime as long as there is an internet wherever the place maybe. Funny, you don’t need to plan ahead on what you are going to wear since you are just at home but of course, for your own vanity, you also like to look pleasant as if you’re going to the office or maybe going to the mall kind of look. Oops, I should not forget to mention, it is cost-effective. Just imagine you do not need to spend on the fare, less temptation on shopping and most of all less expenditure dining in expensive restaurants with colleagues.

As a freelance start-up in Upwork from the year 2015, I stumbled upon a nice lady that gave me several work contracts transcribing audio since she was a book professor. I did not only transcribe for her but also did some virtual services kind of job. And from there, I had a break working a year after as an Admin Virtual Assistant in the Reservations Department in one of the premier resorts in Malaysia. The former Scottish GM, a gentleman, invited me and my hubby to visit the resort last November 2017 and so it was a mixture of work and vacation.

Work & Vacation

Seeing the resort for the first time, I was in awe as it was breathtaking. Meeting my favorite ex-Reservations Manager physically for the first time as well, she made me feel at home and the best RM I had worked with. I was delegated to respond to emails, doing some data entry, coordinating with other departments, promote the amenities offered by the resort and assist guests in their booking requirements.

Experiencing all these, it made me think that the #transition of my career from a call center agent to freelancing is worthwhile. And as we are going through this pandemic, it gave me an opportune time to enroll in FVA Business Consultancy to further my know-how in gaining knowledge and harnessing my skills as I aim to provide A-1 service as a Virtual Assistant.
